Toxic Algae Exposure in Austin Lakes Could Be Fatal to Your Dog

July 14, 2022 by Pool Guy

A dog died within an hour of swimming in “Barking Springs” (part of Barton Creek) this past weekend.

The dog’s cause of death is unknown, but toxic algae exposure is considered a likely cause.

This sort of tragedy happens all too often during Austin summers, and it’s important for dog owners to be aware of the risks of letting their pups swim in local lakes and streams.

Harmful algae may be present in any natural water body in Central Texas at any time, according to a report by KXAN. This can happen more often in hot temperatures and drought conditions.

It is more likely to be along shorelines and in pockets of warm, still water.

If you are looking for a place for your dog to cool off in water, you can book an Austin pool by the hour for sun and puppy fun.

Beautiful backyard and pool, with so many cool floating noodles and toys. We’ve had so much fun and our dog had a blast swimming in a pool for the first time in her life. Definitely recommend!

The Loungy Turtle was even better than I expected. Melissa is a fantastic host, the pool and area are clean and the umbrella provided shade while we ate lunch. I will rent from Melissa again!!!

We had so much fun at Loungy Turtle swimming with our pup and enjoying the sun. Melissa was very communicative and accommodating. She showed us the bathroom and left us to our privacy. Being able to swim with your dog is such a fun experience, we will definitely come again!

Can’t say enough good things about this one! Backyard is amazing, lots of floaty options, there is a fridge you can use to store things, sunscreen, and more. The host greeted us when we got there and showed us everything. She was also very responsive. Will be booking again!

Such a great pool to cool off in! The host has lots of supplies: floats, noodles, towels, a fan, chilled water to drink, even a dog bowl for water. We brought our dogs who decided not to swim much but it was nice being able to have them hanging out with us at the pool.

Super laid back, exactly what we needed.

Pool area was very nice, it was cloudyish when we went but the water was super pleasant and not too cold. I was happy because I got to take my pet for his first swim.
